Sam Ruby defines Web 2.0

Sam Ruby posts his definition of Web 2.0:

"Web[0] is exemplified by static home pages, published in broadcast mode.  Many weblogs today continue to operate in this fashion.

Web[1] is exemplified by e-commerce shopping carts, enabling two way interaction between business and consumers.  Comments and Trackbacks are in this category.

Web[2] is characterized by action-at-a-distance interactions and ad hoc integration.  By my putting a link here, your page rank is changed there.  A book I purchase today affects Amazon’s recommendations tomorrow."

I would only add that there are certain symbolic enablers that help differentiate one generation to the next.  Web[0] was all about HTML.  Web[1] was defined by cookies and web forms.  And now we're seeing "ad hoc integration" occur because of RSS.  There are clearly examples of Web 2.0 business models and applications that don't involve RSS or Atom, but it has become the most common enabler that clarifies the leap from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0.
